The Austroads Guidelines provide design guidance for the planning and construction of cycling facilities in Australia. The states and territories also have design guidelines that relate to their jurisdiction. Australian Standards provide requirements for signage, road markings and bicycle parking. 

Streets for People: Compendium for South Australian Practice (Australia)

In August 2012 the South Australian Active Living Coalition published 'Streets for People'.   The Compendium of South Australian Practice aims to assist professionals and authorities grappling with the dilemmas of creating people-friendly streets whilst meeting the requirements of national standards and regulations applicable to streets and roads.

Australian Standard 1742.9-2000 Manual of uniform traffic control devices - Bicycle facilities

AS1742.9-2000 Bicycle Facilities specifies the requirements for the signs, pavement markings and other devices to be applied to bicycle facilities both on the road and on paths separate from the road, either for the exclusive use of bicycles or joint use with other users. Includes recommendations for guide signs and other navigational information for cyclists.

Australian Standard 2890.3-1993 Parking facilities - Bicycle parking facilities

This Standard sets out the requirements for the layout, design and security of bicycle parking facilities. It applies to the design of parking facilities in any location, either on-street or off-street. The Standard was developed in 1993 and requires updating.

Austroads Guides (Australia)

Austroads publishes guides which cover the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the road network for use by road agencies in Australia and New Zealand. They are a reference for road agencies and promote national consistency and harmonisation and are representative of the agreed approach to work road agencies undertake. All road agencies across Australasia have adopted the Austroads guides.

Cycling Aspects of Austroads Guides (Australia)

Austroads Guide to Road Design (Australia)

The Guide to Road Design provides guidance in the production of safe, economical and efficient road designs. It is aimed primarily at practitioners with responsibilities for the design of roads.  The guide contains a number of parts covering specific aspects of the design process, with each part providing guidelines underpinned by commentaries and resource materials.  The guide deals with the geometric elements of the road, together with relevant drainage and roadside considerations.

NSW Bicycle Guidelines (Australia)

ACT Bicycle Parking Guidelines (Australia)

The ACT Land and Planning Authority released these guidelines in November 2006. The guidelines aim to reduce barriers to cycling by ensuring safe and convenient end-of-trip facilities are available at residences as well as common commuting and recreational destinations.

ACT Design Standards for Urban Infrastructure (Australia)
