Wheels for Wellbeing (UK)

Wheels for Wellbeing provides access to adapted cycles and skills training to people with a disability. Based in south London, the program provides access to hand cycles, adapted tandems, trikes and four wheelers. Their training is run in an off-road environment. The organisation also lobbies for bicycle lanes and parking designs to cater for the size of bicycles used by people with a disability.  

Women’s Bike Blogs (International)

The US based website Bikestyle has published an extensive list of blogs written by women about riding bicycles. In December 2012 the list linked to 662 blogs and includes twitter handles and geographic location of the writers.

In November 2012 the UK public health body the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which develops clinical guidelines for the NHS, released guidelines putting cycling and walking at the centre of efforts to improve the nation’s health, saying they should become the norm for short journeys and should be encouraged throughout local communities.

Citing the growing rates of obesity and physical inactivity, this primer shows how health can be considered in transportation planning and the role that public health practitioners can play in growing stronger and more active communities. It was published in September 2012 by the American Public Health Association and Safe Routes to School. 

Belgium Cycle to Shops Campaign (EU)

In September 2012 one of Belgium’s largest supermarket chains, Delhaize, launched a national campaign to encourage more people to use their bicycles for shopping trips. Delhaize worked with Belgian cycling user groups, GRACQ and Fietsersbond, to develop the campaign which includes promotions to customers and staff, improved bicycle parking and incentives for staff who ride to work.  

Transport for London Cycle Stories (UK)

In June 2012 Transport for London published five videos profiling London bicycle riders. The videos form part of the 'Catch Up with the Bicycle' behaviour change campaign which encourages Londoners to use bicycles for transport.

In September 2012 the Cycling Promotion Fund recreated a world-renowned photograph taken more than 20 years ago to demonstrate the advantages of bus and bicycle travel in congested cities. The captured image shows the typical space occupied in a city street by three common modes of transport—cars, bicycles and a bus—and is being made available free of charge to organisations, group and individuals to help promote the efficiency of public transport and cycling in congested cities.

Bike Like a New Yorker (USA)

This advertising campaign, Bike Like a New Yorker, launched in New York City in August 2012. The billboard and print campaign was developed for Transportation Alternatives by the agency Mother NY. The campaign targets drivers and riders calling attention to cyclists in the city. 

Improvement and Promotion of Bike Mobility: A Specific Marketing Strategy (EU)

This case study, published in 2010, examines the methods used to encourage cycling in the small Italian city of Bolzano where about 30% of journeys are made by bicycle. In 2000 the City began implementing a coherent network of cycling infrastructure, a bicycle parking strategy, a wayfinding strategy and a marketing strategy to encourage more people to cycle.

In July 2012 the City of Sydney launched a website promoting bicycling in the city and its work to develop a conected network of cycling infrastructure to enable people of all ages and abilities to ride a bicycle for transport. The site includes information about events, wayfinding, courses, programs and riding tips, in addition to comprehensive details about the development of the City's 10 regional cycling routes.

Collection of Cycle Concepts 2012 (Denmark)

The first edition of Collection of Cycle Concepts was published in 2000 and enjoyed a wide circulation. This second edition, Collection of Cycle Concepts 2012, updates the field, featuring new challenges and the latest knowledge. Collection of Cycle Concepts 2012 is not intended to be a summary of Danish road standards, but to provide inspiration and motivation for creating more and safer bicycle traffic – in Denmark as well as the rest of the world. It is published in English.

Cycling Illustration Competition (UK)

In 2010 the London Transport Museum asked illustrators to draw the links between cycling in the capital, environment issues, health and fun. Fifty of the 1,000-plus entries were displayed at the museum, in London's Covent Garden. A selection of 17 are available to view on line.

Portugese Children to Receive Bicycle Books for Christmas (EU)

Over 9000 children are receiving bicycle books as Christmas presents under the initiative of Almada City Council. Aged 6-11, the youngsters will see their Santa stockings filled with the beautifully illustrated “o meu livro de bicicletas” (Portuguese for my book of bicycles). Originally created for European Mobility Week in 2011, the book is currently produced in Portugese.  The author is calling upon any other organisations to make use of the book for free and translate it into their own language

US Post Office to release bicycling stamps (US)

In 2012 the US Post Office will release a series of stamps that celebrate bicycling. Each of the four stamps features a different kind of bicycle and rider: a young child just learning to ride with training wheels, a commuter pedaling to work, a road racer intent on the finish line, and an airborne BMX rider.

City of Sydney Everything's Connected Campaign (Aus)

In August 2011 the City of Sydney released four films celebrating the personal stories of people who ride bicycles in Sydney. The films will be shown in local cinemas starting in late August. The City used real people for the campaign, each person featured had contacted the City to express their thanks for the new cycleways. The resulting films have high production values and are a real reflection of Sydney's diverse bike-riding population.

Representations of cycling in metropolitan newspapers - changes over time and differences between Sydney and Melbourne, Australia

This 2010 academic paper concludes that the quantity of reporting of cycling varies over time and by newspaper, and even between newspapers in different cities owned by the same media company. News coverage appears to reflect developments in the different cities, with increases in positive reporting of cycling in Melbourne following increases in cycling in that city. Negative cycling newspaper stories may deter people from considering cycling as a transport option, but real physical or political improvements to the cycling environment may be necessary before coverage becomes more positive.
